What is birth control?

Birth control helps women prevent unintended pregnancies. There are many methods of birth control available at Fort Worth Obstetrics & Gynecology, each working differently to avoid the fertilization of the egg and sperm.

The gynecology team also offers permanent birth control options, including minimally invasive, laparoscopic tubal ligation surgery for those no longer wanting children.

What birth control services are available?

Fort Worth Obstetrics & Gynecology offers many forms of birth control to meet your unique health needs and plans for your family, including:

Barrier birth control

Barrier birth control methods like condoms, sponges, and diaphragms prevent pregnancy by keeping the sperm from fertilizing the egg.

You must use these methods every time you have sex. Condom use is also important to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Short-acting hormonal birth control

Short-acting hormonal birth control methods include prescription pills, patches, and shots that prevent your ovaries from releasing eggs for fertilization.

You can still become pregnant soon after stopping short-acting birth control.

Long-acting hormonal birth control

Long-acting hormonal birth control methods include hormone implants like Nexplanon® and IUDs like Mirena®, Skyla®, and Paragard®.

These methods provide long-lasting protection against pregnancy – some for up to 10 years. You can remove implants and IUDs if you wish to become pregnant.

Which birth control is right for me?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to birth control, so the team at Fort Worth Obstetrics & Gynecology works closely with you to find what works for you.

For instance, if you can’t tolerate hormones because of underlying health issues, you can use barrier methods like condoms or Paragard, a non-hormonal IUD.

For those who can’t remember to take a pill every day, you might benefit from a birth control injection that you receive every three months, the Nexplanon implant, or an IUD.

The gynecology team also discusses your lifestyle, how many sex partners you have, and how soon you plan to start your family to decide which birth control method is a good fit. They offer in-office birth control injections and IUD placement and removal services for your convenience.
